WEATHER CONDITIONS

Season phenology: late

Weather conditions:

A lot of snow was accumulated during winter. Spring was late and prolonged (2-3 weeks later compared to usial dates), but without suddent drops of temperature and snowfalls. Ice-break on Yangayakha R. was about 20 June. Summer weather was close to average, without apparent adverse for birds events.

BIOTIC CONDITIONS

Rodents abundance evaluation:

low

Breeding conditions:

Arctic Foxes were rare and met 3-4 times during the whole season; a den with pups was found 30 km from the study site. Snowy Owls appeared in small numbers only in late June, and as non-breeders. Among skuas only Long-tailed nested. Rough-legged buzzards had reduced clutches of 2-3 eggs.
Reproductive success of geese was high, which supports an assumption of good reproduction also in waders, based on findings of nests with hatching chicks and records of birds alarming near broods. In spite of the late snowmelt, wader nesting was almost not delayed: hatching Dunilins recorded on 3 July, Little Stints - 12 July, Temmink's Stints - 17-18 July. A brood of relatively southern species the Common Snipe was met on 26 July. Mixed flocks of migrating waders accounting for more than 200 birds appeared in Yangayakha R. valley on 7-8 August.

Rodent dynamics:

Collared Lemmings were not met, while numbers of Siberian Lemmings increased compared to previous year: they were met in human habitations, and few times - in tundra, while in 1995 no records were made.
